Tanita Tikaram is a British singer-songwriter born on September 12, 1969, in Münster, Germany. Tikaram grew up in Wunstorf, Germany, before moving with her family to London, then to Fulham, when she was eight years old. Raised in the Hindu religion, she studied violin and classical Indian dance. At the age of 16, she began writing her own songs and performed in London folk clubs. In 1988, she signed a contract with WEA label and released her first album, Ancient Heart, which was a commercial success and reached number one in the UK. The album was certified gold and produced the singles "Twist in My Sobriety" and "Good Tradition". Her second album, The Sweet Keeper, was released in 1990 and reached the Top 10 in the UK. Tikaram later released two more experimental albums, Lovers in the City and Eleven Kinds of Loneliness, before taking a break from her musical career in the late 1990s. She returned in 2000 with the album The Cappuccino Songs, followed by Sentimental in 2005 and Can't Go Back in 2008. In 2016, she released the album Closer to the People. Tikaram has been nominated for two Brit Awards and won the Q Award for Best Female Artist in 1989.
