Bobby McFerrin is an American singer and musician born on March 11, 1950 in Manhattan, New York. He is known for his original vocal technique that allows him to produce complex sounds and rhythms without using instruments. He popularized the style of singing known as "beatboxing", where singers imitate the sounds of percussion instruments using their mouth and voice. McFerrin has also been a pioneer in the use of "scatting" technique, where singers improvise solos by imitating the sounds of jazz instruments. McFerrin started his musical career playing piano and trumpet in jazz clubs in San Francisco. He later studied classical music at the San Francisco Conservatory. In 1978, he recorded his first album, "Bobby McFerrin", which was a commercial success. He went on to release several jazz and pop albums, including "The Voice" (1982), "Simple Pleasures" (1988), and "Medicine Music" (1990). In 1998, McFerrin released the album "Circle Songs", where he used his unique vocal technique to create circle songs with groups of singers. In 2006, he released the album "Vocabularies", which blended classical music, jazz, and world sounds. McFerrin has also been involved in several classical music projects, including as a guest conductor for the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2010, he was named a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Ministry of Culture.
