Deborah Ann "Debbie" Harry, born July 1, 1945, is an American singer, songwriter, and actress, best known as the lead singer of the new wave group Blondie. Blondie's recordings with Harry as lead vocalist have reached several number-one spots on both American and British charts from 1979 to 1981. Blondie's hits include "Heart of Glass", "Call Me", "Rapture", and "The Tide Is High". Harry began her musical career in the early 1970s as a member of the folk rock group The Wind in the Willows, which released two albums for Capitol Records. She left the group before its dissolution and co-founded Blondie in 1974. Blondie became one of the most commercially successful American bands of the 1970s and 1980s, with Harry becoming one of the most recognizable faces in music. As a solo artist, Harry has released three studio albums: KooKoo (1981), Rockbird (1986), and Def, Dumb & Blonde (1989). She has also released several successful singles, including "French Kissin' in the USA" (1987) and "I Want That Man" (1989). In the 1990s, she made a comeback with her band Blondie and released the album No Exit (1999), which was a commercial success. Harry has also appeared in several films and television shows, including John Waters' Hairspray (1988), Polyester (1981), and Cop Land (1997). She has also appeared on Broadway in the musicals Cabaret (1993) and Chicago (1996). Harry was born in Miami, Florida, to Christine Ann (née Raposo) and Richard Smith Harry. She has an older sister, Cathy. Harry's mother was of Portuguese descent, while her father was of English and German descent. Harry was raised in Hawthorne, New Jersey, and attended Hawthorne High School, where she graduated in 1963. She went on to study at Centenary College in Hackettstown, New Jersey. Harry began her musical career in 1965 as a member of The Wind in the Willows, a folk rock group based in New York. The group released two albums for Capitol Records, but did not achieve commercial success. In 1974, Harry and guitarist Chris Stein formed the punk rock band Blondie. The group released their self-titled debut album in 1976, followed by Plastic Letters (1978) and Parallel Lines (1978). Blondie became one of the most successful American bands of the 1970s and 1980s, with Harry becoming one of the most recognizable faces in music. Blondie's hits include "Heart of Glass", "Call Me", "Rapture", and "The Tide Is High". The group's fifth studio album, Eat to the Beat (1979), was a commercial success, reaching number one in the UK and number two in the US. The group's sixth album, Autoamerican (1980), was also a success, reaching number three in the US and number five in the UK. In 1981, Harry released her first solo album, KooKoo. The album was produced by Nile Rodgers and included the single "Backfired". In 1982, Harry and Stein appeared in the film Videodrome. In 1983, Harry released the single "Rush Rush", which was featured in the film Scarface. In 1986, Harry released her second solo album, Rockbird. The album included the singles "French Kissin' in the USA" and "In Love with Love". In 1989, Harry released her third solo album, Def, Dumb & Blonde. The album included the singles "I Want That Man" and "Sweet and Low". In the 1990s, Harry made a comeback with her band Blondie and released the album No Exit (1999), which was a commercial success. In 2003, Harry was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Blondie. In 2014, Harry published her autobiography, Face It.
