Bobby Darin (born Walden Robert Cassotto; May 14, 1936 – December 20, 1973) was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and actor in the fields of film and television. He performed in a variety of genres, including pop, rock 'n' roll, jazz, folk, and country. Darin was born in the Bronx, New York, to a middle-class Jewish family. His father, Van, was a tailor, and his mother, Nina, was a homemaker. Darin's real name was Walden Robert Cassotto. He adopted his stage name from his mother's ironic expression, "Oh, Lord, Bobby Darin!" Darin's first professional engagement was singing in a nightclub in the Catskills at the age of 16. He later began performing in nightclubs in New York and the New Jersey shore. Darin's first single, "Rock Island Line"/ "Timber", was released in 1956 on the Decca label. Darin's version of "Rock Island Line" was influenced by Lonnie Donegan's skiffle version. Darin's follow-up single, "Splish Splash", was an instant hit, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1958. The song was written by Darin and produced by Ahmet Ertegun. Darin's next single, "Dream Lover", was another massive hit, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1959. The song was written by Darin and produced by Ertegun. Darin's next single, "Mack the Knife", was a cover of a German song, "Die Moritat von Mackie Messer", written by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. Darin's version of the song was an instant hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1959. The song won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1960.
