The Drifters

BIOGRAPHY

The Drifters are an American doo-wop and R&B music group, formed in 1953. They had a string of hits in the US pop charts in the 1950s and 1960s, including "There Goes My Baby," "Save the Last Dance for Me," and "Under the Boardwalk." The group was originally formed by Clyde McPhatter in 1953, from a group of friends who informally sang together under the name of the "Crowns" in Harlem. After a few years of moderate success, McPhatter was replaced as lead singer by Ben E. King. The group continued to record with King as lead singer until his departure in 1960. The Drifters then hired Rudy Lewis as their new lead singer. Lewis led the group on their most successful string of hits, including "Save the Last Dance for Me," "This Magic Moment," and "There Goes My Baby." Lewis died in 1964, and the group hired Johnny Moore as their new lead singer. Moore led the group on a string of hits that included "Come On Over to My Place," "Up on the Roof," and "On Broadway." The group's last major hit was "Kissin' in the Back Row of the Movies," released in 1974. The group disbanded in 1986, but was rebooted in 1988 with a new lineup. The Drifters had a total of 60 singles in the Billboard Hot 100, with 21 reaching the Top 40. They have also been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
