Tina Turner is an American singer, dancer, and actress born on November 26, 1939 in Nutbush, Haywood County, Tennessee. She is considered one of the most popular and influential singers of 20th century pop music. Turner began her career in the 1950s as a rhythm and blues singer with the rock and roll group Ike & Tina Turner Revue. With this group, she achieved international success with songs like "River Deep – Mountain High" and "Proud Mary". In 1976, Turner embarked on a solo career and immediately found success with her debut album, Tina Turns the Country On!. Her 1978 live album, Tina Live in Europe, became one of the best-selling live recordings in music history. Turner continued to record and tour until the mid-1990s, after which she retired from the music scene. She came out of retirement in 2000 and embarked on a critically acclaimed world tour. In 2008, Turner released her autobiography, I, Tina, which was adapted into a film in 1993. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.
