Dire Straits is a British rock band, originally from London, England. The band consisted of Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler, John Illsley, and Pick Withers. The band was formed in 1977 and achieved international commercial success with their debut album, Dire Straits, in 1978. Their second album, Communiqué, was released in 1979 and reached number two in the UK. The band's third album, Making Movies, was released in 1980 and reached number one in the UK. Their next album, Love over Gold, was released in 1982 and reached number one in the United States. The band released their fifth album, Brothers in Arms, in 1985. The album was a commercial success and reached number one in numerous countries, including the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, France, Australia, and New Zealand. The band disbanded in 1995, but temporarily reunited in 1999 for a reunion tour. The band again disbanded in 2002. Mark Knopfler continued his career as a solo artist and released several albums.
