BIOGRAPHY
Asia is a British rock band from Birmingham, England, formed in 1981 by guitarist Steve Howe, bassist and singer John Wetton, keyboardist Geoff Downes, and drummer Carl Palmer. The band members had previously played together in groups such as Yes, King Crimson, and Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The band's self-titled debut album, released in 1982, was a commercial success, reaching number one on the Billboard 200 and selling nine million copies in the United States.
During the 1980s, Asia experienced commercial success with singles such as "Heat of the Moment," "Only Time Will Tell," and "Don't Cry." However, artistic differences led to the departure of Howe and Downes in 1985. Wetton and Palmer continued as a duo with guitarist and singer Mandy Meyer. The group reunited in 1991 with guitarist and singer Al Pitrelli, releasing two albums, Aria (1994) and Arena (1996), before disbanding again in 1998.
In 2006, Wetton, Howe, and Downes reunited for a world tour and released a new album in 2011, Omega, with drummer and percussionist Billy Sherwood. Unfortunately, in 2013, Wetton passed away due to cancer and the group disbanded once again. In 2018, Howe, Downes, and Palmer celebrated the 35th anniversary of the band's self-titled album with a world tour featuring singer and bassist Billy Sherwood. They also released a new studio album, Gravitas, in 2019.
