BIOGRAPHY
Edwin Starr (born Charles Edwin Hatcher on January 21, 1942 in Nashville, Tennessee, United States - died on April 2, 2003 in Belleville, Michigan) was an American soul singer, known for his hit War.
Raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Starr began his musical career in the 1960s, performing in Detroit clubs. He signed with the Motown label in 1966 and released his first single, Agent Double-O-Soul. His most famous song, War, written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong, was released in 1970 and reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100. It was ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
Despite the release of singles in the 1970s and 1980s, none had the same success as War. Edwin Starr died of pancreatic cancer in 2003.
