BIOGRAPHY
George Benson is an American jazz guitarist, singer, and composer, born on March 22, 1943, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He began his musical career playing blues and rhythm and blues in the clubs of his hometown.
In 1964, he joined the jazz organ group of Jack McDuff, before participating in Miles Davis's jazz-fusion album Bitches Brew in 1970. Subsequently, he signed with the CTI Records label and released his first solo album, The George Benson Cookbook, in 1971.
His following album, Breezin', was a massive commercial success, reaching the top of the Billboard 200 and becoming the first jazz album to reach that position. It is also certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
During the 1980s and 1990s, George Benson released several albums, most of which were commercial successes. In 2006, he was inducted into the Jazz Hall of Fame of the Smithsonian Institution. His album Breezin' was elected to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
