BIOGRAPHY
Johnny Clegg is a singer, songwriter, and dancer from South Africa, born on June 7, 1953, in Bacup, England. His parents are from Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), and his family moved to South Africa in 1960. Clegg studied violin and classical music at Johannesburg Diocesan College. In 1969, he met Zulu guitarist and dancer Sipho Mchunu, with whom he learned traditional Zulu dances and formed the band Juluka in 1976. Their music, which fused Western and African influences, was banned under the apartheid regime. In 1985, after separating from Mchunu, Clegg formed the group Savuka and released the album "Third World Child" in 1987, which includes the hit "Asimbonanga," dedicated to Nelson Mandela. He won a Grammy Award in 1988 for his contribution to the soundtrack of the film "The Lion is Dead Tonight." In 1996, he was named Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of the French Republic, and in 2004, Commander of the National Order of the Lion of Senegal. Johnny Clegg is considered one of the most important African artists of his generation.
