Kurtis Blow is an American rapper, producer, and DJ. He is considered one of the pioneers of hip-hop, and his single "The Breaks," released in 1980, is considered the first hip-hop hit. Born in the South Bronx, Kurtis Blow began his musical career in New York clubs during the 1970s.
In 1979, he signed with Mercury Records and released his self-titled debut album in 1980. Produced by Russell Simmons, the album reached number 61 on the Billboard 200. Its single "The Breaks" reached number 87 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Throughout his career, Kurtis Blow has released seven studio albums, the latest being "America," released in 2008.
