Marillion

BIOGRAPHY

Marillion is a British progressive rock band originating from Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, formed in 1979. Widely regarded as one of the pioneers of progressive rock in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the band's commercial success was initially limited in the 1980s, with only two albums reaching the Top Ten in the UK. However, Marillion gained popularity in North America and continental Europe in the 1990s. The band is known for its complex and ambitious music, as well as its poetic and melancholic lyrics. Marillion was formed in 1979 under the name Silmarillion, before changing to their current name in 1981. The original lineup consisted of lead vocalist Fish (Derek William Dick), guitarist Steve Rothery, keyboardist Mark Kelly, drummer Mick Pointer, and bassist Pete Trewavas. Their debut album, "Script for a Jester's Tear", was released in 1983 to critical acclaim, helping the band gain recognition in North America. Their second album, "Fugazi", released in 1984, further solidified their popularity. In 1985, Marillion released the album "Misplaced Childhood", which topped the charts in the UK and solidified their reputation in North America and continental Europe. Their fourth album, "Clutching at Straws", released in 1987, was also successful. Marillion continued to release successful albums throughout the 1990s and 2000s, including "This Strange Engine" in 1997 and "Marbles" in 2004. With albums such as "Happiness Is the Road" in 2008 and "Sounds That Can't Be Made" in 2012, Marillion has maintained their place on the international music scene. The band continues to tour and record music, staying true to their unique progressive style.
