BIOGRAPHY

Michael Sembello is an American singer, composer, and producer born on April 17, 1954, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He is best known for composing the song "Maniac," used in the Flashdance soundtrack with Jennifer Beals, and for performing the song "She's a Maniac" in the 1983 film Maniac, with Joe Spinell. Sembello began his musical career playing guitar in the Philadelphia rock bands The Sprites and The Deacons. In 1977, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue his musical career and quickly found work as a session musician, working with artists such as Stevie Wonder, Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer, Jerry Goldsmith, and Quincy Jones. In 1982, Sembello composed the song "Maniac," which became a worldwide success, reaching number one on the charts in the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. In 1983, Sembello performed the song "She's a Maniac" in the film Maniac, with Joe Spinell. The song became a worldwide hit, reaching number four on the charts in the USA. In 1984, Sembello released his first solo album, The Lost Tribe, which reached number 49 on the US charts. In 1986, Sembello composed the song "Gravity," used in the soundtrack of the film The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise. In 1988, Sembello released his second solo album, Bossa Nova Hotel, which reached number 70 on the US charts. In 1990, Sembello composed the song "Freedom," used in the soundtrack of the film Days of Thunder with Tom Cruise. In 1991, Sembello released his third solo album, Strange Animal, which was not as successful as expected. In 1993, Sembello composed the song "Maniac 2000," a remake of the song "Maniac" used in the soundtrack of the film Flashdance with Jennifer Beals. In 2003, Sembello released his fourth solo album, Carved in Stone, which was well received by critics. In 2013, Sembello released his fifth solo album, Strange Universe, which was highly acclaimed by critics. Sembello was married to actress and singer Marcy Levy from 1977 to 1984. They had a daughter, Nicole, born in 1980. Sembello is currently married to actress and singer Lori Singer. They have a daughter, Lily, born in 1992.
