Stephen Varcoe is a British classical music artist. Born in England in 1953, he studied music at the University of Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music. In 1977, he won the Royal Academy of Music prize. He made his professional debut in 1978 with the English Bach Festival. In 1982, he was named artistic director of the Cambridge University Musical Society. In 1985, he became a lay clerk at the Chapel Royal of St. James. In 1991, he was appointed a lay clerk at the Chapel Royal of St. George. In 1995, he was appointed a lay clerk at the Chapel Royal of St. Paul. In 2001, he was appointed a lay clerk at the Chapel Royal of Westminster. In 2007, he was appointed a lay clerk at the Chapel Royal of St. Michael. Varcoe has also taught music at the University of Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music. In 2013, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He lives in Cambridge with his wife and two children.
