The group was founded under the name of the Roosters by singer-songwriter, manager, and Chicago-based producer, Jerry Butler, in 1958. The original lineup consisted of Butler, Arthur Brooks, Richard and Ralph Thomas, as well as Sam Gooden. The group's first single, 'For Your Precious Love', was a success, reaching the 11th spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and the 3rd place on the R&B charts in 1958. The song was co-written by Butler and Arthur Brooks. The group's second single, 'Come Back My Love', was also a hit, reaching the 12th spot on the Hot 100 and the 5th place on the R&B charts. The group continued to record and release successful singles, including 'Ain't That Loving You Baby' (1964), 'Choice of Colors' (1969), and 'We're a Winner' (1968). Their final charting single was 'Love Me' (1983). The Impressions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991."
