La Roux is a British synthpop duo formed in 2008 by singer and pianist Elly Jackson and producer Ben Langmaid. The group's name is inspired by the female character from the Street Fighter II video game. The duo's first single, "Quicksand," was released in March 2009 and reached number 55 on the UK Singles Chart. The band's self-titled debut album was released in June 2009 and reached number two on the UK Albums Chart. The group's second single, "In for the Kill," was released in April 2010 and reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. The third single, "Bulletproof," was released in July 2010 and reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming the group's first number one single.
In May 2012, it was announced that Langmaid had left the group, leaving Jackson to work on their second album solo. Trouble in Paradise, the group's second album, was released in July 2014 and reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart. Jackson and Langmaid won the award for Best Synthpop Album at the Q Awards in 2009 and were nominated for Best British Group at the Brit Awards in 2010.
