Summer was born LaDonna Adrian Gaines in Boston, Massachusetts on December 31, 1948. The song, written and produced by Moroder, became a global hit, reaching number one on the charts in the United States and Germany. The success of "Love to Love You Baby" allowed Summer to sign a contract with Casablanca Records, and she went on to record her first studio album, Lady of the Night.
