Jimmy Somerville

BIOGRAPHY

British artist with an extremely distinctive falsetto voice, Jimmy Somerville is well known for his involvement in two of the most famous pop groups of the 80s, Bronski Beat and The Communards. Somerville was born on June 22, 1961 in Scotland. In 1983, he formed Bronski Beat with Steve Bronski and Larry Steinbachek. Their song "Smalltown Boy" was a big hit. At the height of their popularity, Somerville left Bronski Beat in 1985 and formed The Communards with Richard Coles. The group is best known for their hit "Don't Leave Me This Way", which spent four weeks at number one on the UK charts in 1986. After The Communards disbanded in 1988, Somerville pursued a successful solo career based on his emotive, high-pitched voice, often performing covers of 70s disco songs with his own unique twist. Somerville's most recent project is an orchestral pop album titled "Home Again", released in 2004.
