"Girls Aloud is a British pop music group formed in 2002 during the second season of Popstars: The Rivals. The group consisted of Cheryl Cole, Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts, and Kimberley Walsh. Girls Aloud experienced immediate commercial success with their first single, "Sound of the Underground," which reached the top of the UK charts. Their first album, Sound of the Underground (2003), was also successful and was certified double platinum in the UK.
The group continued to find success throughout the 2000s and 2010s, with five studio albums, all of which were certified at least gold. Girls Aloud sold over 4 million albums in the UK and over 15 million singles. They also won numerous awards, including two Brit Awards and six MTV Europe Music Awards. In March 2013, Girls Aloud officially announced a hiatus in order for each member to pursue solo projects."
