Epica is a Dutch symphonic metal band originating from Limburg. The band was formed in 2003 by guitarist and composer Mark Jansen following his departure from the band After Forever. Epica is known for its elaborate musical arrangements and philosophical lyrics, which tackle themes such as religion, philosophy, karma, and spirituality. The band's music is influenced by various artists and genres, including symphonic metal, gothic metal, power metal, and death metal. The band's first album, The Phantom Agony, was released in 2003 and was followed by seven additional studio albums. The band's latest album, The Holographic Principle, was released in 2016. Epica has sold over 3 million albums worldwide and has performed in over 40 countries.
