James Williams is an American pianist, composer, and conductor born on July 10, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois. He began playing the piano at the age of seven and studied at the Chicago Music Conservatory before earning a degree from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Williams was a member of the Thad Jones and Mel Lewis jazz orchestra, with whom he recorded several albums. In 1977, he joined the Stan Kenton orchestra and also collaborated with artists such as Woody Herman, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, and Ella Fitzgerald. In 1982, he founded the Chicago Jazz Orchestra and recorded numerous albums with this group. He was also musical director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1997 to 2006. As a teacher, Williams has worked at Northwestern University, the University of Chicago, and the Eastman School of Music. He was also artistic director of the Chicago Ravinia Festival from 2006 to 2011. Recognized for his talent, James Williams was named an Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters of France in 2011 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Chicago Jazz Festival in 2012.
