Summer was born LaDonna Adrian Gaines in Boston, Massachusetts on December 31, 1948. She was the only child of Andrew Gaines, a Pentecostal pastor, and Mary Gaines (née Mullins), a choir singer and kindergarten teacher. She grew up in her father's faith and was raised as a devout Christian. Summer spent her childhood in Milton, Massachusetts. She studied piano and flute in her youth, and began singing in her father's church choir. She later studied theater at William McKinley Technical High School, before moving to New York to pursue a career in show business. Summer made her professional debut performing in various Broadway productions, including Hair, Show Boat, and Porgy and Bess. The sister of actor and singer Bruce Sudano, she also worked as a studio singer and recorded commercial jingles. In 1971, Summer was discovered by music producer Giorgio Moroder, who invited her to record a song called "Love to Love You Baby". The song, written and produced by Moroder, became a global hit, reaching number one on the charts in the United States and Germany. The success of "Love to Love You Baby" allowed Summer to sign a contract with Casablanca Records, and she went on to record her first studio album, Lady of the Night. The album, produced by Moroder, was a commercial success, reaching number one on the charts in the United States and Germany. Summer continued her collaboration with Moroder on her second studio album, Love to Love You Baby, released in 1975.
