BIOGRAPHY
Boris Gavrilyuk is a Ukrainian composer and pianist born in 1957 in Kiev. He studied at the Kiev Conservatory with Sviatoslav Richter and later in France with Pierre Sancan and Nadia Boulanger. In 1980, he won the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Subsequently, he taught at the Kiev Conservatory and was appointed as a piano professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Gavrilyuk is regarded as one of the most important Ukrainian composers of his generation. His works have been presented in numerous international festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, the Lucerne Festival, the Tanglewood Festival, and the Prades Festival. In 2012, he received the Koussevitzky Prize from the Serge Koussevitzky Foundation for his contributions to chamber music.
Gavrilyuk is known for his virtuosic writing and energetic, passionate concert works. His compositions are described as a unique combination of Russian elegance and Ukrainian passion. He has also created numerous choral and vocal works, as well as solo piano pieces and piano concertos.
A member of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and the Russian Academy of Arts, Gavrilyuk was elected to the French Academy of Fine Arts in 2009. In 2013, he was named Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters of France.
